The Brothers Grimm.For my money, Terry Gilliam is one of the more innovative, creative, and fantastical directors of the last two decades. His films easily bear his stamp of absurdist humour, witty dialogue, sheer fantasy, dream-like sequences, and always a generous dose of black comedy.
Time Bandits is certainly no exception, but rather a stepping stone for greater works such as The Fisher King and the wonderful Brazil. The film tells the story of a group of dwarf-like "crooks" who leave their jobs with God the Supreme Being for a life of crime via a map they have "stolen" from their job place.
This map holds all the secrets to time holes in the fabric of creation. Thus the bearers of the map can go forward and back in time as they please.
They use the map to steal, at which they have little skill, and become rich, at which they miserably fail. Gilliam transports them and us through time to meet such interesting notables as Robin Hood, Napoleon, Agammenon, and the Evil Genius devil-like entity.
The film is grand in its scope and still wanting, for it is tackling a story of epic proportions.
Still, Gilliam delivers a pretty good film both visually stunning in certain sequences and brimming with philosophical questions such as the necessity of evil and the election of choice in life.
The film is also very funny in many parts, due in large part to a great cast. The protagonists are all quite good.
John Cleese plays as likable a Robin Hood to be seen with his almost overly polite manner. The best performances go to Ian Holm, playing a drunken Napoleon obsessed with his size, David Warner, playing the malevolent Evil Genius with relish, and lastly to Sir Ralph Richardson, playing the Supreme Being like a bureaucrat concerned with balancing payroll and the like.
Gilliam explores the bureaucratic mentality with even more scope in his Brazil. All in all, Time Bandits is a fun and entertaining picture.

Please try again later. Verified Purchase. Movie 5 of and 85 overall in my journey through films of my lifetime. I love wierd movies. It changed my approach to cinema and ultimately my worldview even, forever.
I loved every movie we watched say for one: "Brazil. I tried two more times to watch it and simply couldn't do it. Later I would watch other Terry Gilliam films and I found them equally boring see my "Life of Brian" review in this retrospective.
I do plan on seeing more of his work but I don't have high hopes. The "little people" craze of the eighties is something I remember well.
It was novel in "Under the Rainbow," which I have never seen in full but will in this retrospective, and it was perfected in "Willow.
If you are a fan of adventure stories like "Lord of the Rings" or " Acquisitions Incorporated" you may like this as well. The special effects have aged well making "Time Bandits" a testiment to the effectiveness of practical effects.
In the end I found the story boring. No matter how good the effects or acting or directing without story I lose interest.
As with so many adventure movies it was somewhat pointless, fun, but pointless. I've watched this with my son growing up and gave it to him for a wedding gift so he can watch with his children.
Children's movies should be legitimately scary. They should make children work. They should make children think. And happy endings are like mayo on wonder bread.
Time Bandits is spicy mustard on rye. The story is about Kevin a pre-teen kid who loves history but is ignored by his parents. He goes on an adventure through myth and the past with the help of 6 dwarves who stole a map from the Supreme Being to navigate through time.
It turns out they are committing robberies while the Supreme Being is attempting to get the map back and the devil wants it as well. The beauty of the movie is how it weaves in all kinds of historical figures into the story.
Kevin for instance meets Napoleon who is obsessed with his small stature. Then he meets Robin Hood whose marry men turn out to be a group of real ruffians who abuse the poor.
The dwarves are real characters as well and provide some laughs. This movie creates a real sense of adventure and fun and shows how much of a talent Gilliam was as a director.

It was around the time when I first took the plunge to go HD and as much as I appreciated the gift the end result was nothing more than baffling.
Firstly the DVD looked better than what I was seeing. After inserting the disc there are scenes playing in the background on the main menu and they were nothing more than breathtaking bearing in mind these were just 2 second clips gearing you up for what you were about to see and it was just stunning, seeing the film like it was the first time.
Then pressing play takes you into a whole different experience. It was just awful, black lines appearing and jumpy screen shots popping up from nowhere.
Whoever viewed the Blu-Ray at head office and signed it off as a worthy release is clearly not working in the industry today and if he or she is then maybe any poor release on Blu-Ray is because of this person.
So after a couple of years of never forgetting this rough start into trying a new format Arrow Video announced they were releasing a remastered version of the film with Director approved extra's.
It has to be the best release there will ever be on the film. It has a lot of what we have never seen. It is lacking a full throttle all you can eat documentary but has many interviews with Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin, David Warner etc to keep you satisfied.
My actual favourite addition to the extras was a restoration demonstration which to me fees like an apology for the first release but it wasn't made by Arrow then but still a great way to look at it.
Seeing how they restored the film is an exciting insight into how remastering is done. Never be in doubt Arrow's release of Time Bandits is the best there is and possibly will ever be so do not hesitate and buy this as soon as you can.

I already had an earlier Blu-ray release of this film released 5 Oct I had not played it in ages and when I did recently my 4 year old Sony Blu-ray player refused to play it.
After spotting this 2k- restoration released 26 Aug I decided to get a copy, especially when I noted the list of interesting special features that are included.
I am happy to say this disc played with no problems and it was great to see the film again.

The picture and sound qualities on this disc was excellent especially taking into account the age of the film. Eventually I spotted a tiny little white dash - that indicated the feature you have selected.
