On a cold and snowy day six months earlier, Billy and his gang had been run to ground by Pat Garrett and a posse at a small rock cabin at Stinking Springs, a few miles east of Fort Sumner.

It took them to Santa Fe, where they spent three months in jail. While he wrote letters from his cell to the governor of New Mexico, pleading for a pardon, Billy and his fellow gang members did their best to dig a tunnel to freedom.

After officials discovered the escape attempt, Billy found himself in solitary, shackled to the floor of a cell as dark as a cave. Near the end of March, Billy and one other gang member, guarded by three deputy U.

Marshals, including an old enemy, Bob Olinger, boarded a train southward for Mesilla, where they would face trial.

Billy endured tormenting by Olinger throughout the trip. On April 13, Billy heard his sentence: He would be sent to Lincoln, where he would be hanged.

On April 16, Billy began the trip, by wagon, to Lincoln, under a seven-man guard, including, again, the hateful Bob Olinger. Once in Lincoln, Billy came once more under the custody of Pat Garrett, who had him shackled to the floor of his courthouse cell and placed under the guard of Olinger and Deputy James W.

Late in the afternoon 12 days later, Billy watched as Olinger left the jail with five other prisoners, heading to the hotel across the street for dinner.

Billy asked Bell to take him outside to the privy. On the way back into the courthouse and his cell, Billy, although shackled with hand and leg cuffs, bludgeoned Bell with the chains.

Billy shot the deputy, leaving him to stagger outside and collapse, dying almost immediately in the arms of a passerby named Godfrey Gauss.

Though impeded by his shackles, Billy quickly made his way upstairs. Billy stood at an open second-story window like a wolf spider waiting for prey.

Within moments, as he anticipated, he saw Olinger pass on the ground below, rushing back from the hotel to the courthouse to investigate the gunfire.

He fired both barrels full into the face and chest of his tormentor, killing him instantly. With the help of friends, Billy freed himself from his shackles.

Over the next two weeks, he drifted south along the drainage of the Pecos River, northeast across the High Plains of Texas, then back southwest to his old haunts around Fort Sumner.

Now, he looked south toward Mexico. Garret, who would become a legend in his own right, thought that Billy would surely head south immediately, into Mexico, beyond the reach of the law.

Still Garrett waited, through May, through June, into July. Garrett, an ex-buffalo hunter, had drifted into east central New Mexico in , according to Utley.

He married an Hispanic woman, and after her premature death, he married another Hispanic woman. Garrett had friends of his own in the region.

His quarry, he learned, had not run immediately for Mexico, but had holed up somewhere around Fort Sumner. Garrett got ready to pounce.

He enlisted two deputies, John W. They headed for Fort Sumner. As both The Kid and Garrett certainly knew, Fort Sumner had been the setting for memorable chapters in the history of the Southwestern frontier.

During the Civil War, it had served as a concentration camp for the Navajos and Mescalero Apaches, who lost many of their people in the insect-infested fields and fetid waters of the Pecos River valley.

It had become the northernmost point on the Pecos River leg of the Goodnight-Loving Trail, which Texas cowmen used to drive tens of thousands of longhorn cattle to markets as far north as Wyoming.

Before Billy could stand trial, he escaped. The film was noted for behind-the-scenes battles between Peckinpah and the studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Soon after completion, the film was taken away from the director and substantially re-edited, resulting in a truncated version released to theaters and largely disowned by cast and crew members.

Peckinpah's preview version [Note 1] was released on video in , leading to a re-evaluation, with many critics hailing it as a mistreated classic and one of the era's best films.

Garrett is riding with men working for the Santa Fe Ring, when he is ambushed and coldly killed by his associates, including one John W.

Later, over drinks, Garrett informs Billy that the electorate want him out of the country, and that in five days, when he becomes Sheriff of Lincoln County, he will make Billy leave.

They offer a thousand dollars for the capture of Billy the Kid, with five hundred dollars upfront. Garrett rejects the money saying they can pay him in full when Billy is brought in and warns them that he will be successful as long as another cattle war is not started.

Meanwhile, Billy returns to his gang at Old Fort Sumner, where he decides to lie back for a few days.

He is confronted by three strangers looking to kill him; all three are killed in the subsequent shootout, helped by another stranger called Alias Bob Dylan , who kills one of the men with a knife through the neck.

Alias had witnessed Billy's escape from the Lincoln County Jail. Baker and his wife Katy Jurado go with Garrett to arrest some of Billy's old gang.

In a gunfight, the gang members including Black Harris L. Jones are killed and Baker is mortally wounded. Baker's wife comforts the dying lawman as he waits to die by a river.

Later that evening, Garrett watches a barge floating down a river with a man shooting bottles in the water. Garrett and the two face off briefly from a distance before lowering their rifles.

Garrett is joined by a glory-seeking John W. Along the way, Billy stops at the Horrell Trading Post, which is owned by an old friend.

After they finish eating, Billy and Alamosa step outside for a duel at ten paces , with Billy shooting Alamosa dead. Meanwhile, Garrett and Poe arrive at a saloon.

Garrett tells Poe to ride on without him and that Garrett will pick him up in Roswell in five or six days. Three members of Billy's gang come into the saloon.

After taunting Holly Richard Bright and getting him drunk, Garrett shoots him dead after he pulls a knife.

He tells Alias to give Billy a message that they had "a little drink together". Garrett rides to Roswell ahead of Poe to gather more clues on Billy's whereabouts.

Poe arrives in Roswell to find Garrett naked and in bed with several prostitutes, and confirms that Billy is in Fort Sumner.

Garrett recruits an old friend he helped become a sheriff and along with Poe rides to Fort Sumner to find Billy. Later that night Billy and his girlfriend, the daughter of Pete Maxwell, have sex as Garrett and his two deputies arrive.

Billy goes to get some meat and, after seeing Garrett's deputies who are both afraid to shoot the Kid , backs into a bedroom where Garrett shoots him.

Garrett angrily hits Poe for attempting to cut off Billy's trigger finger. He stays on the porch until morning, when the townspeople of Fort Sumner, having heard the news of his death, gather to see Billy's lifeless body.

Garrett mounts his horse and rides out of town, with a small boy throwing stones at him. The two had previously worked together on the acclaimed film Two-Lane Blacktop Sam Peckinpah became involved through actor James Coburn, who wanted to play the legendary sheriff Pat Garrett.

Peckinpah believed that this was his chance to make a definitive statement on the Western genre and complete the revision that he had begun with Ride the High Country and The Wild Bunch Working with Wurlitzer, he rewrote the script in order to create a more cyclical narrative, and added a prologue and epilogue depicting Garrett's own assassination at the hands of the men who hired him to kill Billy the Kid.

In the original script, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid never met onscreen until the film's conclusion, and Wurlitzer reportedly resented Peckinpah's reworking of the narrative.

Wurlitzer and Peckinpah had a strained relationship, and Wurlitzer would later write a book highly unfavorable to Peckinpah. Peckinpah initially considered Bo Hopkins for the part of Billy, but he eventually cast country music star Kris Kristofferson as the outlaw.

Kristofferson was 36 when the film was made, playing year-old Billy. Kristofferson's band would play small roles, along with his wife Rita Coolidge.
