From: Jannik Hastrup. Synopsis: The film revolves around a young white male sperm whale named Samson, who strongly believes the legendary tales of Moby Dick.
The legends say that Moby Dick was a hero for all whales, and that he will someday return. He meets Sally, a young black-and-white female sperm whale who is orphaned after her pod is slaughtered by whalers.
Samson's pod adopts Sally and she befriends Samson even though she does not believe in Moby Dick. Samson and Sally together survive certain dangers, such as killer whales, a massive oil slick, radiation poisoning, and whaling ships, which they refer to as "iron beasts.
The walruses, drumming the explosives as would be expected in any cartoon, detonate one of the bombs and are blown sky high, out of the water and back onto the rig.
Still blissfully unaware, they continue to prance around, even as one of the radioactive barrels lands on the rig next to them, and starts leaking hazardous material into the water.
When the walruses eat the contaminated fish, their tusks fall out, and large sores break out all over their bodies.
The scene ends with Samson saying a quick line to Sally, before the two of them swim away as if nothing had just happened.
This scene, more than any other, contrasts with my memory. None of the other elements — the skeletons, the warships, the weapons, the radioactive waste, the contamination — stuck in my mind at all.
The whales decide that their only way to survive is to hold their breath for as long as they ca, and swim under the oil spill.
We follow them as they dive deep into the abyss, nothing but their eyes visible in the dark. Watching, I could feel the intensity of their danger.
The pressure. The claustrophobia. One of the whales panics as they begin to run out of air, uttering what I can safely assume is one of the only lines of dialogue I remember from childhood.
As the whale sinks to the bottom, it lets out a few terrified, futile gasps before fading away completely. Apparently already over the death of their pod-mate, Samson and Sally have a brief falling-in-love montage that climaxes with them swimming behind a rock as a red heart begins to swell before bursting into two smaller cupid-whales.
How about when Scar killed Mufasa? You knew this movie was going to have a scene like that right? Except that, while those scenes stood out as the most horrific in their respective movies, this one seemed much more par for the course.
He says goodbye to Sally, and goes off on his own. He also exchanges a few words with an enormous baleen whale before continuing on his way.
Following the setting sun, Samson comes across a sea floor littered with anatomically-detailed whale skeletons. Above him, a ship shrouded in the night dumps barrels of toxic waste into the sea.
Hundreds of barrels are piled on the ocean floor. As Samson becomes mired in the toxicity, he begins to gasp and spasm before quietly sinking to the bottom.
For a while, he lies motionless, most of his body obscured by rocks. Nothing but his tail is visible. A shark comes to investigate, preparing to bite into him before being chased away by the baleen whale from before, who carries Samson away to cleaner waters.
Once Samson is awake, the whale leaves him behind. Seeing a brilliant orange light on the horizon, Samson follows it excitedly.
The closer he gets, he notices all the sea life around him anxiously swimming in the opposite direction. Confused, he is informed by a passing sea turtle to stick his head above the water to get a better look.
The entire ocean surface on the horizon is on fire, huge blazes pumping black smoke into the sky. An oil spill — either the same one as before, or another — as caught fire.
Samson knows the only way forward is to hold his breath and swim under it. As he moves deep underwater, he comes across the giant baleen whale again, smiling blankly and covered in oil.
He prods the whale, and a few bubbles escape from his blowholes. Otherwise, the whale shows no sign of life.
Without another word, Samson keeps going. Traveling into the depths of the abyss, Samson discovers a cave, and is eager to explore it.
But before he reaches the cave mouth, a large octopus seizes him by the tail and shrouds them in a cloud of ink.
As the ink clears, we see Samson lying unconscious on the rocks, a few squirming octopus arms lying beside him. The figure of a whale emerges from the cave and pulls Samson in.
The next scene almost seems to cut to another film entirely. The ancient ruins of some ancient Greek or Roman city, complete with towering columns, sculptures, and even a colosseum.
Within the confines one of these ruined buildings, we find Samson still unconscious from his previous encounter. A lone fish stops by and peeks in through the gaps in the columns.
It only leaves as Samson begins to wake. As it turns out, Moby Dick is actually the one who saved Samson. At first, Samson is overjoyed at having finally found his long lost hero.
But that joy very quickly turns to frustration as it becomes apparent that Moby Dick has become a weak, senile, useless creature, unable even to feed himself.
Crestfallen, Samson decides to leave Moby Dick behind and rejoin his old pod. He leaves an octopus as thanks for his help, and then sets off on his own again.
Samson swims through the ruins of the aged city. It appeared as if Samson was swimming through a modern city scape.
Any doubts about this are extinguished when, like something out of Planet of the Apes , Samson swims by the Statue of Liberty, algae growing profusely on its already green surface.
Samson returns to the surface to find a storm raging among the waves. Seeing a flash of red light, Samson discovers a sinking ship that looks eerily like the Titanic.
Upon seeing him, the survivors in the lifeboat shoot him with a gun. Angered, he slaps their boat with his tail, capsizing it.
The film seems set to end with Samson wandering around icebergs in the arctic, still alone. But out of nowhere, his pod returns and Samson eagerly rejoins them.
A short epilogue scene shows a fully grown Samson and Sally rearing their own pup, whom Samson saves from an attacking killer whale. There are a few things in particular that give me pause to reflect on all of this.
If you ask me, a lot of this shit is pretty fucked up. There are plenty of movies that we go back to and see disturbing images and themes that seemed not to phase us when we were children.
What sticks out to me about all of the fucked up shit in Samson and Sally is its intention. My favorite movie of his, The Land Before Time , is a good example of this.
The infant dinosaur, Littlefoot, is separated from his family after his mother is killed by a tyrannosaur, and he must survive, along with other baby dinosaurs, long enough to reach a paradise in a dying world.
The world around them is bleak, and withering, with green appearing very sparsely. There are visceral, disturbing images of natural catastrophe and animalistic horror, emphasized by the terrified shrieks of the young dinosaurs.
And yet, despite all of this, the protagonists remain resilient, and through strength and determination, reach the promise land. The lesson here is to never give up, no matter how horrible the world around you may be.
At first, Samson and Sally seems to follow his school of thinking. After all, Samson gets his happy ending, right? He returns to his pod, mates with Sally, and seems to be living a happy life.
Samson and Sally is a story of futility and hopelessness. There is no beauty in the world, only horror and suffering. Any hope of changing this will prove pointless.
We are all slaves to the callous, indifferent ways of the world. Even then, nothing in the world has changed, and he and his family are still in danger from all of the horrible things we have just witnessed.
As has been noted by any others, the themes of environmentalism are not subtle. However, there is one thing that sets Samson and Sally apart from many of the other environmentally-conscious movies made at this time.
There is a strange juxtaposition of environmental catastrophe in this film. However, these contrast with the more modern threats of chemical waste and oil spills that also plague the animals of this world.
And then finally, things become even more muddled and confused when we see the sunken ruins of New York City, implying that we are in some sort of future environmental dystopia.
In Samson and Sally , the past, present, and future of environmental catastrophe collide into a world filled with the horrors of all three.
Is it possible that there are other spirits in this world as well? Their stark white, shadowless, colorless visages appear so out of place.
It would also explain why the titanic appears to be sinking once again in what could very well be a future world. If this world truly does take place in a post-apocalyptic future, why are there oil spills?
Why is chemical waste still being dumped? The oil rig the walruses dance on top of is clearly abandoned. Where is all of this pollution coming from?
The only answer I can think of is that humanity itself is long dead, but all of our worst habits — our malevolence, our greed, our selfishness, our stupidity, our destructive power — has outlived us.
Any hope of changing this will prove pointless. Hundreds of barrels are piled on the ocean Mungobohnen Gesund.
