However her daughter Sarah did recall Lord Hay being present at the ball. Perhaps the biggest inaccuracy in the film is the battleground itself: having had torrential rain the previous night, which delayed the French attack until midday, the battlefield was extremely muddy.
In consequence, the British cavalry, in reality, would not have been able to acquire the speed shown in the film before encountering the French columns.
However, here, as elsewhere, the film replicates a famous painting of the battle, in this case Elizabeth Thompson 's work Scotland Forever!
Another inaccuracy is that the Household cavalry do not seem to appear in the movie at all. Further, Ponsonby, commander of the Union Brigade, is believed to have initially been taken prisoner by French cavalry, before being killed during a failed rescue attempt.
In the film, he tells the Earl of Uxbridge that Ponsonby's father had been killed in battle by lancers, not least because he had been riding an inferior horse: in fact his father had been a politician who died of natural causes back in England, [17] and he is simply foretelling his own fate in the battle.
The British cavalry charge was aimed at d'Erlon's corps, but in the film the cavalry do not appear to engage French infantry at all, but instead charge straight into French artillery, scattering French gunners before themselves being driven back by French lancers, in scenes that bear some cinematic resemblance to the Charge of the Light Brigade.
Nor are any 92nd Highlanders seen hanging onto their stirrups as they charge, as was recalled by Corporal Dickson of "F" Troop of the Scots Greys.
Unlike the Prussians in the film, arriving at the right flank of the French force, General Bülow 's 4th corps attacked at the rear-right of the French lines at the village of Plancenoit.
Napoleon sent first his reserve corps under General Lobau and then the Second Foot Grenadiers, the second-most-senior corps of his Imperial Guard, to engage and delay these Prussians while maintaining his front line; these clashes in and around the village of Plancenoit were crucial to the battle.
The Duke of Gordon is depicted as leading his Gordon Highlanders into battle, and is described by the Duchess of Richmond as "uncle": in fact, he is a composite character , representing the contributions of several members of the House of Gordon.

Lord Hay is seen being killed during the French cavalry attack, whilst inside a British square, with Wellington witnessing his death.

Commander of the last Imperial Guard square, General Pierre Cambronne , is portrayed as responding "merde" although he denied it later.

The problem most war movies have, especially if they depict one battle, is the addition of extraneous sub-plots. I suppose the film makers think a broader audience will appreciate a movie more if there's an ordinary fellow shoved in that we can follow, and a love interest.
Perhaps this view is valid. Christopher Plummer was born to play Wellington, and he underplays the part beautifully, so that you know what he's thinking by the flick of an eyebrow or the corner of his mouth.
Steiger looks like the older Napoleon, and he tends to chew the scenery, but Napoleon flew into unrestrained rages. The movie does an admirable job of doing what so many lesser war movies don't: it gives you a good idea of what's going on in the field.
If you pay attention, you won't be at a loss for the strategy or tactics. Furthermore, the way it was shot has kept it from aging. It doesn't look like a "spectacle" from the '50s or '60s -- and though it employs a few of the poor film-making choices of its time that late-sixties film makers thought were so cool but which turned out so confusing and easily dated -- it doesn't seem dated at all.
The script has a peculiarity that might well have destroyed it: the writers seem to have excavated every famous quote from Napoleon, Wellington, et al, and shoved them all into the dialogue; and, amazingly, it isn't a distraction.
The worst problem the film has as a whole is its tendency to try to duplicate famous paintings by Meissonier, Lady Butler, and others; sometimes this works, giving the color tones we have come to expect of the period from those very artworks.
Occasionally, it's distracting. There are a few very rough cuts that look pretty bad. But the movie originally was more than four hours long, and the American release suffers from somewhat poor editing and splicing.
Surely it's time to bring a full and wide-screen release to home video? However, if you like your historical war movies diluted with love stories and fictional characters, rather than having the real brains behind the battles at center stage, you'll probably be bored to tears by it.

The impact of the 15, authentically dressed extras, recreating the battle sections with true numbers without special effects, is unsurpassed, and was the highest number of costumed extras in any film.
In French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte , facing certain defeat at the hands of the Sixth Coalition , abdicates at the demand of his marshals.
He is banished to Elba with 1, men, but escapes and returns to France. King Louis flees, Napoleon triumphantly enters Paris , and the European powers declare war.
Napoleon, enraged that Ney has let Wellington withdraw to ground of his choosing, directs 30, men under Marshal Emmanuel de Grouchy to pursue Blücher and keep the Prussians from rejoining the British, while he leads his remaining force against Wellington.
The battle of Waterloo , delayed to let the ground dry after the previous night's storm, starts shortly after am with cannon fire from the French.
Napoleon launches a diversionary infantry attack on Wellington's right flank, the Chateau of Hougoumont , but Wellington refuses to divert forces.
Napoleon then attacks the allied left with the Comte d'Erlon 's infantry corps. General Picton , in civilian dress having lost his uniform when his mule was lost, successfully halts the attack but is killed.
William Ponsonby 's cavalry brigade, the renowned Union brigade, including the famous Royal Scots Greys , pursue the French, but go too far across the battlefield and become isolated from the rest of the Allied force, and are thus cut to pieces by Napoleon's lancers.
Ponsonby himself is killed. Napoleon realises that troops spotted emerging from the woods to the east are Prussians Blücher's army , not French Grouchy's force , but keeps this from his army.
He then suffers stomach pain and withdraws temporarily, leaving Marshal Ney in command. Ney, in his desperation to win before Prussian intervention, misinterprets a reorganisation of the Allied line as a retreat and leads a cavalry charge, which is repelled with heavy losses by allied infantry squares.
Napoleon returns and rebukes his marshals for letting Ney attack without infantry support. However he hopes that Wellington's line has been worn down.
As they advance they are repulsed by Maitland 's Guards Division , who were lying unseen in the grass on the reverse of the slope.
The repulse of the Guard devastates French morale, and the arrival of the Prussians makes matters certain.
After refusing to surrender, the final square of the French Imperial Guard is annihilated with close range cannon fire. After the battle, Wellington wanders among the sea of dead in reality 46, were killed in the battle , as survivors organise them into groups according to regiment.
He laments the cost of victory - "next to a battle lost, the saddest thing is a battle won". At the same time Napoleon, who had declared that he would die with his men, is dragged by his marshals from the field and later departs in a carriage for Paris.
The high level static bird's eye view of the battle formations, in particular the French cavalry attacking the British squares of infantry, act like textbook diagrams of the plan of attack and echo the shots taken in the Russian film War and Peace , filmed using hot air balloons four years earlier.
Much of the photography is done in half speed and in relative silence giving a dream-like quality to some of the charges. De Laurentiis announced the film in October , saying it would be made the following year.

Columbia Pictures published a page, full-colour pictorial guide when it released Waterloo in According to the guidebook, Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis had difficulty finding financial backers for the massive undertaking until he finally began talks with the Soviets in the late s and reached agreement with the Mosfilm organization.
To recreate the battlefield "authentically", the Soviets bulldozed away two hills, laid five miles of roads, transplanted 5, trees, sowed fields of rye, barley and wildflowers and reconstructed four historic buildings.
To create the mud, more than six miles of underground irrigation piping was specially laid. Most of the battle scenes were filmed using five Panavision cameras simultaneously — from ground level, from foot towers, from a helicopter, and from an overhead railway built right across the location.
In particular La Haye Sainte is almost invisible from the north and west, sitting in a small south-facing hollow. Actual filming was accomplished over 28 weeks, which included 16 days of delay principally due to bad weather.
Many of the battle scenes were filmed in the summer of in often sweltering heat. In addition to the battlefield in Ukraine, filming also took place on location in the Royal Palace of Caserta , Italy, while interior scenes were filmed on the large De Laurentiis Studios lot in Rome.

Ik verschiet er eerlijk gezegd wel van dat dit uit stamt, had dit qua stijl echt halverwege de jaren '50 verwacht. Verder is dit echter vooral een film die lijdt onder de lange speelduur want hoewel de bekende strijd nog wel de moeite is, is vooral de aanloop ervan erg traag.
Andere tijden natuurlijk, maar dan zijn er films die dit toch wel een stuk beter aanpakken. Gelukkig kan dit soort grootschalige Hollywoodproducties altijd rekenen op een aantal bekende koppen.
Christopher Plummer plukte nog altijd de vruchten van zijn legendarische rol in The Sound of Music en werd hier gecast als Wellington. Een vleugje humor hier en daar en vooral veel charisma.
Iets wat ook gezegd kan worden Rod Steiger die de rol van de kleine generaal op zich neemt. Hoewel de twee op het slagveld nooit fysiek met elkaar in contact komen, zit er toch een zekere spanning tussen hen.
Ieder op hun eigen manier indrukwekkend in ieder geval, maar het grootste hekelpunt is toch de taal. Het occasionele 'merde' of Vive la France' helpt natuurlijk bitter weinig en voelt zelfs erg geforceerd aan.
Soundtrack van Nino Rota ook nog, die doet nooit iets verkeerd. Waterloo is in ieder geval een interessante film om eens gezien te hebben. Bondarchuk levert een stilistisch mooie film af, erg benieuwd naar zijn vierluik rond War and Peace, en met Plummer en Steiger is er een sterke cast ter beschikking.
Had meer in gezeten volgens mij. Na 30 jaar weer gekeken naar deze film. Viel mee alleen traag dat was vroeger zo. Goed speel van Rod Steiger.
Gezien toen ik 24 jaar was in de bios in Rotterdam. Hij leeft enige tijd in ballingschap op het eiland Elba, maar ontsnapt binnen een jaar met een klein leger, vastberaden om Frankrijk terug te winnen.
Deze waarlijk epische film vertelt hoe hij opnieuw de macht wist te grijpen in Frankrijk, maar richt zich ook op Duke Wellington [Christopher Plummer], de arrogante aanvoerder van het Britse leger, die door Napoleon op de hielen wordt gezeten, maar bij Waterloo besluit de confrontatie aan te gaan in de hoop dat Pruisische versterkingen op tijd zullen komen om de strijd in zijn voordeel te kunnen beslissen.
Niet alleen versterkt hij daarmee Napoleons opvliegende karakter, het verklaart ook hoe Napoleon de aandacht van een heel leger voor zich op wist te eisen met zijn relatief kleine, doch uiterst energieke gestalte, een bulderende stem, een oprechte liefde voor zijn land, zijn soldaten en vooral een geloof in eigen kunnen.
Dat geloof heeft hem groot gemaakt, maar is hem uiteindelijk ook opnieuw noodlottig geworden. Steiger is briljant in het neerzetten van boeiende personages die op dat grijze gebied zitten tussen good guy en bad guy.
Napoleon is ook een historisch figuur die meningen verdeelt. Is hij de vaderlandselievende, geniale krijgsheer en hervormer?
Christopher Plummer laat zich niet overschaduwen door Steigers imposante vakwerk en zet ook een gedenkwaardige vertolking neer.
Producent Dino DeLaurentis zorgde ervoor dat regisseur Sergei Bondarchuk de beschikking had over 15,! De tactieken van Napoleon, Wellingdon en de Pruisische generaal Von Blücher zijn eindeloos bestudeerd en Bondarchuck weet de slag dus tot in detail na te bootsen.
Waterloo lag in de Zuiderlijke Nederlanden. Wel mooie beelden van de veldslag. Hoe dan ook, de slag vond plaats in Waterloo is het grootschalige epos over de nederlaag van Napoleon Bonaparte tegenover Arthur Wellesley, de Hertog van Wellington en niet te vergeten Gebhard von Blücher van Pruisen en Willem II der Nederlanden al komt die niet voor in de film.
Rod Steiger en Christopher Plummer spelen hun rollen sterk, maar het beste van de film waren toch wel de aankleding met vele kostuums en de indrukwekkende wijze waarop de veldslagen in beeld zijn gebracht, compleet met slow-motion cavalerie-charge en de camera die in vogelvluchtperspectief over de gevechten heen gaat.
Geen wonder dat de film een inspiratiebron was voor Peter Jackson. Sovjet-Russische regisseur Sergey Bondarchuk maakte eerder al verfilmingen van Oorlog en Vrede ook over de Napolitaanse tijd.
Waterloo was zijn enige westerse-film. Helaas was de film geen succes, ondanks het zeer hoge budget. Hetgeen er ook voor heeft gezorgd dat Stanley Kubrick geen producenten voor zijn Napoleon-film kon vinden en dat is natuurlijk eeuwig zonde voor iedere filmliefhebber.
Ik kijk gemiddeld elke dag sowieso 2 films of meer. Ik ben een liefhebber van o. Mij oudste film uit mijn collectie is uit Als de film Engelstalig of Duitstalig is gesproken dan ben ik niet afhankelijk van ondertitels, is de film anderstalig bv.
Chinees e. Waterloo van regisseur Sergey Bondarchuk heb ik vrij laat na zijn premiere ooit voor het eerst gezien op 1 van de BBC zenders gezien, ergens rond Maar uiteraard is deze monumentale film ook in mijn prive videotheek beland en heb deze uitstekende film vanmiddag herzien.
Het eerste uur van de film is rustig, maar het 2e deel van de film is overweldigend met enorme massa scenes en veldslagen en blijft dan ook vlot lopen.
Regisseur Bondarchuk overtreft niet de kwaliteit van de ernorme veldslagen van zijn eigen 8 uur durende epos Voyna i Mir uit Die zijn daar uitermate veel en van buiten proporties groot van omvang.
Die wil ik binnenkort ook even weer zien. In Waterloo vind ik de acteer prestaties matig, behalve van Rod Steiger als Napoleon. Uitstekend zijn de locaties, kostuums, props, uitstekende camerawerk en goeie soundtrack van Nino Rota.
Waterloo was weer een geslaagde herziening. Een 4. Indrukwekkende en geloofwaardige reconstructie van de slag van Waterloo, die er na 50 jaar erg goed uit ziet.
Alles werd daarvoor uit de kast gehaald en Bondarchuk kon rekenen op meer dan De film was nochtans een kassucces maar de productie was zo duur dat dit zelfs niet volstond om alle kosten te dekken.
